I love this film, one of the bits which makes me giggle every time is not intended for humour, it's one of those overblown soft focus shots when Claudette Colbert looks like she's being filmed through a camera liberally daubed in Vaseline!
It also stars Clark Gable who is rather swoonworthy.
* * *
A pampered socialite (played by Claudette Colbert) who is trying to escape her family gets help from a roguish reporter (Clark Gable) looking for a story.
The plot was based on the August 1933 short story "Night Bus" by Samuel Hopkins Adams, which provided the shooting title. It Happened One Night was one of the last romantic comedies created before the MPAA began enforcing the 1930 production code in 1934. It was released on February 22, 1934.
It Happened One Night was the first film to win all five of the major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay) and it would sit alone with this feat until 1975's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and then The Silence of the Lambs in 1991.
In 1993, It Happened One Night was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Did you know ... that while shooting the scene where he undresses, Clark Gable had trouble removing his undershirt while keeping his humorous flow going and took too long. As a result the undershirt was abandoned altogether. It then became cool to not wear an undershirt which resulted in a large drop in undershirt sales around the country. Legend has it that in response, some underwear manufacturers tried to sue Columbia.
