Swoon on a Saturday: Foppish Beauty

Public schoolboys and fops ahoy!

Hi-jinks, toadies, homo-eroticism and foppish beauty, I bring you the boys from Brideshead and If...

Brideshead Revisited
Anthony Andrews and Jeremy Irons
As a teen I favoured Sebastian, as a grown up I think Charles has the edge.
Despite having 'moved on' from Sebastian, the picture in the middle makes me feel rather unnecessary, I think it's something to so with his arrogant expression and those gloves!
Who is your favourite?

If...
Richard Warwick, Malcolm McDowall and David Wood.
Richard Warwick please and thank you very much

And hello to my new followers! Welcome aboard!

  1. Anthony Edwards when I was a teen, Jeremy Irons now, too. One of my friends was at Oxford and all the posh boys loved us when I came up to visit, they'd never met common types like us! Shame they didn't appeal to me, I could have been a politician's wife now! xxx

    1. Love your Oxford story! I can just imagine you as a politicians wife, standing next to some Oxbridge type in your platform boots and lurex minis! That would be beyond fabulous!

  2. Yes indeed, what a delightful post! I've always rather enjoyed a dapper dandy myself, too, especially if period costumes are involved. :)

    1. There really is something about a dandy and I cannot get enough of period dramas, though Downton Abbey does nothing for me (I'm likely in the minority there).

  3. Yes, the middle piccie makes me swoon (public school boys ARE my thing!) but the second set of pictures makes me uneasy because that blond chap's face is the SPITTING IMAGE of an old teacher work colleague who left, except he was much fatter, messier hair and rather a cockney wideboy!

    1. I thought you might like this post! I quite like the description of that work colleague! He sounds a bit of a character!

    1. I have my Tom firmly fixed in my head, I just need to give myself a kick up the bum to get on with it! Colin, I am dreading, I am stuck on what to do and am dithering over a possible idea of how to do it but am pinging back and forth, undecided.

  5. I must admit I've never properly watched either of these, I've always seen bits and pieces of them. Maybe 'Brideshead Revisited' should be my next box set from the library. I like Malcolm McDowell but there's something a bit menacing about him too. Me and Pat always say when Jake's eating he looks like Malcolm eating that bowl of food at the end of 'A Clockwork Orange'. For some reason that really stuck in both our minds. I watched him when he was older in 'Gangster One' as well and that was a pretty horrible film, I think it was Paul Bettany who was in it, I'm not sure if that's his name or not? He usually acts quite gentlemanly characters but he was scary in that and Malcolm McDowell was pretty evil too. xx

    1. I recall Brideshead from when it was actually on originally, but it's a very, very hazy memory; I remember Sebastian and Aloysious by some steps or some such. Malcolm McDowell certainly does have something menacing about him, it's the eyes and the way he stares, he has very intense eyes. If... is on a lot, usually on ITV2 or 3, so it's easy to catch it on and is well worth a watch. I was hesitant at first as Andy described his memories of it as not having a clue what was going on, as he hadn't ever watched it properly, but we watched it together and both really enjoyed it. I've never seen that gangster film, though I recall when it came out and they were comparing it to 'A Clockwork Orange'.

    1. It's a very beautiful production. I was given the box set as a gift Christmas 1999 but fell asleep during the first episode on new years day as we had been up all night at the millennium celebrations in London!
