Andy's band has just got a new bass player and this bass player, Matt, well his dad is in a Kinks tribute band. Yesterday there was a Kinks convention at which said tribute band was playing, so Matt invited his new band mates along, putting them on the guest list which was kind of him.
I go absolutely giddy when faced with Ray Davies, regardless of his age when I see him, as not only do I adore his voice but I am fascinated by his mouth, it's beautiful and he has a lovely smile; I also love the gap he has between his front teeth .. go here to see one of my all time favourite clips of him, oh that smile! (1.58 minutes in, oh this makes me all un-necessary. 1.03 too ... actually, let's just say the whole thing and be done with it shall we).
So, imagine my glee when I got to go too! Free Kinkage! Of course there was no guarantee Ray would be there, but there was a possibility as he had done so before.

Half an hour before Luke the drummer was due to pick us up, Andy got a text from Matt who was unfortunately poorly and couldn't come too. When Luke found out, he didn't want to go at all, I was distraught! I like to think my distress forced his mind to continue on the original plan because off to London we went! Huzzah!
I was shoe-horned into the back of a Ford Ka and we were on our way! The traffic was shocking but we got there at 2.30pm. The place was packed with Kinks fanatics and I have never had so much positive attention in my life, and mostly from women, which still boggles my mind.
What also boggled my mind was the venue, it looked so familiar and it should have done too as the three of us had been there before, to see Billy Childish ..
Then
Yesterday ..
We have been to London, the three of us just twice and both times have found ourselves in the same venue, so that was strange.
*
My back started to play up after about half an hour and a man spilled his drink down my leg which peeved me no end, so we moved to a place near the stage. I set about leaning on walls and what not and had a good old people watch.
I had been there a while before the door next to me opened (it was a fire escape into a tiny corridor which led to the street) and I turned to come face to face with Ray Davies .. inside my head, the part that goes absolutely giddy was going to pieces while the sensible part of my brain was telling me not to stare as that was rude. But I couldn't help it, I had to look because it was Ray Davies for heavens sake! Wide eyed, I looked in what I suspect was a rather coy manner, look, glance away, look, look down, and very much enjoyed that little moment as oh my goodness, word quickly spread and women from all corners descended on my quiet corner, it was chaos and he quickly made his way back stage .. this was the best picture Andy could get as I personally do not see him as my property to annoy with a camera and the poor man looked very under the weather bless him.
*
Random picture by Luke .. apparently I married the devil. Behold facial expression which screams "Don't blink!"
Time moved on.
Ray was nowhere.
I was bored.
I decided to nip into that small corridor behind the fire escape to freshen up my lipstick. I found my mirror but could not find my lipstick and then someone hit me with the door. I moved to the other side of the teeny area and lo, Luke squashed me behind the door as I was having a rummage in my little handbag.
Suddenly there was a commotion and I looked up to see Ray Davies stood two foot in front of me, looking right at me with a smile on his face.
I froze mid rummage and realised I was looking right into the eyes of Ray, who was smiling at me. Never in my lifetime did I ever think I would be that lucky. I watched as he struggled out of the venue through this tiny space with multiple people hanging on to him trying to touch him and get his attention. All I could do was be squashed against the wall, handbag held aloft with a bewildered expression on my face, so I hope I didn't come across like a rabid fan girl.
And then he was gone. But, but he smiled at me :)
Luke decided we should slope off, so we did, and he wanted a picture of us outside in case we ended up there again ..
*
The trip home was long and we got a bit lost. Back here, we sat in Luke's car watching Horrible Histories clips on his iPad for a few minutes as he had never seen the King of Bling!
We also managed to get a few outfit shots before coming in ..
Really, I have no idea what I am doing with my arms, but Andy cracked up when he took this, he said it looks like I am dancing wildly.

Yes, it was cold ..

Funnily enough I bought a 1967 Teenbeat annual from the flea market last week, there's an interview with Ray in there. I'll scan it and share it with you. Glad you had a wonderful time. x
ReplyDeleteOh I would love to see that, thank you!
DeleteWow, you lucky thing!
ReplyDeleteI know :)
DeleteIt's kept me smiling since then.
Maybe you don't get out often Melanie but you make it a good one when you do! I love Ray Davies, I felt all emotional when he sang 'Waterloo Sunset' at the Olympics opening ceremony. I'd probably act like a complete pillock if I bumped into him or anyone like that, and say something really inappropriate, then spend the rest of my life cringing at the memory of it. He always makes me think of Gruff Rhys from the Super Furry Animals for some reason, and I love him too! I love Billy Childish as well, so lucky you seeing him. I'm not so much into his music, though he sounds like he would be good live, but I love his books and his ideas. There you go making me think about all these men again Melanie, you always set me off! And you were watching 'Horrible Histories' too, a very enjoyable night altogether by the sound of it. xx
DeleteYes, when I go out it must be worth depleting my energy levels for and you can't get better for that than Ray! Waterloo Sunset is such a beautiful song, I was so cross with David Bowie who I used to like, when he covered it and made it all Bowie-ish, I instantly went off of him!
DeleteI'm not very good at meeting famous people if I like them, I get awestruck! I once met the singer from Dr and the Medics, though I didn't know it was him at the time, I thought he was a roadie as he obviously didn't have his hair done and wore no make up; I chatted away to him for ages and only realised who he was when he was on stage! Arthur Brown reduced me to a mute as he is so charming and tall and has a lovely speaking voice too. I've met so many people from bands but rarely the band members I have thought highly of as I knew I would make a fool of myself!
Billy Childish's music can be a hard pill to take, I'm not so much into it, though I really like 'Medway Wheelers'. Andy has liked him since Thee Milkshakes and as he was a punk, has more of the stomach for it than me! I think it was the Buff Medways we saw, though there are so many line ups and band names that I find it hard to keep up! Actually, It might have been the Musicians of the British Empire.
We did have fun, I would have been so upset had I not been able to go and found Ray was there. I have a quiet time coming up now and then Andy has a gig at the end of the month xxx
I think I've only met a famous person once. I was about fifteen and on a school trip to London and we met Paul Rutherford from Frankie Goes to Hollywood. He was waiting for the train back to Liverpool, same as us schoolgirls and as we went running over to him he was smiling but you could see it in his eyes he was going "Shiiit". He was lovely though and put up with us all. Once we got on the train some of the braver girls went and sat in his carriage and probably hassled the life out of him until a teacher went and dragged them back to our group. xx
DeleteI used to like one of Frankie, but cannot recall what his name was. Paul always made me laugh, he was great! I have met a fair few 'famous' people, but I think the amount of people who have heard of them would be slim, but I did meet Christopher Biggins years ago, he was so lovely! It was at a Rocky Horror convention and what made it so nice was that he waved at me in the car park and then approached Andy and myself to speak to us in the bar. Such a nice man.
DeleteThe singer from Deus (remember them?) also came up to me at a gig to see if I was okay getting in (he thought I had lost my ticket).

Ooh I love the new font. Keep saying I'm going to smarten up my blog but I never get round to it. xx
DeleteI thought I could do with a wee change around, nothing too drastic but the font was too good to pass on!

DeleteRay davies!!!! Lucky you! I have a soft spot for his gappy tooth charm too x
ReplyDeleteHehe, so I'm not the only one who goes all soft and squishy over that gap!

How seriously cool! I'm sorry that your back was being problematic in the midst of such an exciting, action packed evening. You have my complete understanding there, dear Melanie.
ReplyDelete♥ Jessica
Every cloud as they say, as my going somewhere to rest my back led me to be in the exact right place to see him!
Deletexxx
How lovely do you look!?? And wowie, you got to meet him twice!!!! Even if you did look stunned, that's so awesome! I would have been the same!!!!
ReplyDeleteAww thank you! I didn't get to meet him per se, but I was a mere two feet away and he smiled, so that was lovely.
DeleteHe came into Pizza Express Reading when I worked there many years ago... We also had Uri Gellar as a 'regular' - and that was an experience! No bent forks, but the night he didn't get his usual table loads of weird things happened!!!
ReplyDeleteOh I love your Uri story! I hadn't thought about him in years! We apparently get Jude Law in our Pizza Express.
DeleteGo you!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a great time though sorry to hear about your back and the cold!
Yay! I was smiled at by a Kink! How easily pleased am I, hehe.
DeleteIt was such good fun but was bitterly cold when we left. I keep forgetting it's late November!
Wayhay! Glad you had a great time.xx

Oh I do love a gap! Love, love a gap! And when it's surrounded by a smile such as Ray's then I am absolutely good for nothing! All grotty things were forgotten because he smiled at me!
DeleteAnd thank you lovely, it's my favourite, well one of them!
